Providing project support and stewardship to empower your impact

Collaborating to preserve Colorado

For more than six decades, we've partnered with individuals, private entities, and public agencies on grant writing, grant sponsorship and administration, technical support, endowment and custodial-fund services.
How can we strengthen your preservation effort?

Above: Boggsville settlement and former trading hub on a spur of the Santa Fe trail in southeast Colorado. The Colorado Historical Foundation secured and managed grants, and conducted project oversight in partnership with the Bent County Historical Society to expand the site's National Register narrative and shore up the Boggs and Prowers houses. The Society granted a conservation easement to the Foundation to protect the 93-acre site in perpetuity.

Grant sponsorship and administration
As a charitable nonprofit with staff seasoned in preservation best practices, grant management, and financial oversight, we are well positioned to sponsor grants in partnership with people and organizations strategizing to save and protect the places they love.
Current projects: As the conservation easement holder on the Como Hotel (South Park) and the San Francisco Morada (Costilla County), we've gone to bat to help each property owner secure funding and technical support to ensure their properties are fortified to stand another 50 years. We provide grant writing and project management support to each: The Como Hotel is conducting much needed roof and masonry work, while the San Francisco Morada is receiving water drainage mitigation plus some critical adobe repairs.
Custodial funds and endowments
Since our founding, we have collaborated with agencies and donors to receive and oversee funds intended to support specific outside projects and programs that align with our mission.
Some - such as our Stephen H. Hart Research Center Fund, used to add historical photos and documents to the Center's collection - are intended for as-needed use.
Others are established as long-term endowments so that earnings off the original donations grows over time and provides annual, predictable support.
Additional Services
Historical designation alone does not protect a historic property. A listing on the National or State register is quite and honor - but does not come with any restictions. A local listing may be protected by a local ordinance, but those are subject to future poltical whims. Find out how to protect your historic property with a conservation easement.

Solid stewardship

We take our stewardship responsibilities seriously and strive to support and collaborate with the communities closest to the projects we support and their associated histories. Staff have deep nonprofit financial oversight, project strategy, and fund management experience. The Foundation's finance committee works with a professional investment advisor to balance fund growth and risk, and the Foundation is audited by an independent CPA annually.
